A great supplement after playing the Nier Automata game if you aren't ready to leave that world. It pretty much recounts the game but books are better at giving you an insight into characters minds that games cannot.
Why did I start reading it?
Loved the game, nuff said.
What is it?
Humans have escaped to the moon and an army of androids occupy earth fighting the machine lifeforms in hopes of taking the earth back. Glory to humanity.
What are the characters like?
Nier's characters are great and even better in this book. Sure, there are plot points that work in the game because we don't see what's going on in their heads but is it fun to be able to see that. 2B in particular is fascinating. She has so much going in in her head. Juggling her mission and personal feelings. Bless this bot.
What's the bad news?
DO NOT READ THIS BOOK AS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE GAME.
DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU HAVE PLAYED ENDINGS A-E
Sorry to yell but this is very important. The downside of this book is it expects your prior knowledge and speed runs through some events and even completely skips some.
And the good news?
This booked helped me understand a lot more about some things in the game. Nier isn't too forth coming with mainly it's enemies and I came to understand the standing of Adam, Eve, and the red girl a bit more in this book as their motives are more clearly spelled out.
Other than that, it’s just great. I was worried going it would be a boring repeat of the game but with the extra knowledge from the POV and the more emotional charged telling was a great addition to and already fantastic experience.
Would you recommend?
Assuming you have played the game then yes. This can only upgrade your love of the series. I can't wait to get to book 2!
